Fitness Video Games

Video games have been extremely prevalent in our society and will continue to be.  Unfortunately, video games have a stereotype of someone sitting in front of a screen for hours on end, never seeing the light of day.  They are a reason many children and adults are not as physically active as they should be.

According to the current physical activity guidelines, more than 80% of adult Americans do not get enough physical activity.  Statistically, only one in three children meet the youth physical activity guidelines.

This is why video game companies have created wonderful fitness games and sensor devices for people to be more interactive and get their bodies moving.  This allows you to work out in the privacy of your own home AND still be playing video games.  You can even invite your friends over and make it a fun group activity.

By playing these fitness video games for at least 3.5 hours each week, you will already be on your way to meeting some of the adult physical activity guidelines.  There are so many games out there, so make sure you find the right one that fits your interests!  To get you started, here are the top 5 most popular fitness video games:

Wii Fit & Wii Fit Plus

This Nintendo system uses a scale-like controller that you stand on and can do more than 40 different types of training activities!  The Plus version includes new strength-training, yoga, and balance mini-games.  You even use your “Mii” – a digitized version of yourself – as the player in the fitness games.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved – XBOX 360 Kinect

An on-screen instructor will guide you through some intense workouts and give you a score based on your performance.  Tai Chi and Yoga are only a couple things you are able to do with Your Shape. These workouts will be tailored to your age, height, and weight, so you aren’t over exerted. 

EA Sports Active 2 – XBOX 360, PS3, Wii

This one comes with three sensors you can wear that will give you information on your heart rate during your work out.  This game allows you to personalize a workout routine based on your needs and goals.  It will create a routine for you for a given amount of time and will leave you breathless.

Dance Central – XBOX 360 Kinect

This is for the dance lovers out there and anyone who loves to party.  This game uses the Kinect sensor to capture your movement along with the dance instructors on the screen.  It will show whether or not you are hitting the moves correctly.  It is packed with great music.  One can easily get lost in time playing this game for hours.

The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout/Challenge – XBOX 360 Kinect, Wii

NBC’s show The Biggest Loser created this to give interactive workouts and nutrition goals led by trainers, Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels.  This is for if you are really looking to get fit.  It will provide you challenges; no mini-games here.
