Avocados are all the rage! They’re found in smoothies, fruit bowls, breakfast sandwiches, burritos, on toast, and even on their own. Avocados are a stone fruit found in warm climates that have a creamy satisfying texture. The question is, are avocados beneficial to our diet? Avocados contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. Let’s take a look at the possible health benefits of avocados. 

Healthy for the body:

Avocados contain beta-sitoserol. Beta-sitoserol is plant sterol that have been used to decrease cholesterol, that in turn can be healthy for your heart.  Avocados also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, these are two phytochemicals that can provide antioxidant protection to our eyes. These phytochemicals minimize damage from UV light.   

Prevents Osteoporosis:

Half of an avocado provides around 25% of the recommended intake of Vitamin K. Vitamin K is essential for bone health, like vitamin D and calcium.  Vitamin K supports bone health and can increase our calcium absorption. 

Lowers Risk of Depression:

Avocados contain high levels of folate. Folate is good for you not only during pregnancy, but it also helps to prevent the build up of homocysteine. Homocysteine can impair circulation and delivery of nutrients to the brain and also interfere with our serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine production.  These three neurotransmitters regulate our mood, appetite, and sleep. 

Improved Digestion:

Avocados are actually high in fiber. Fiber prevents constipation, and a healthy GI lowers our risk of colon cancer.  Regular bowel movements help us excrete toxins, making avocados a natural detox. 

Chronic Disease Protection:

High Fiber can lower our risk of diseases like coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, some GI diseases, and strokes. Increased fiber can also lower our blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and help with weight loss.
